Anthony J. Parrillo, P.J.A.D. (ret.), a former Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division, is Of Counsel with Szaferman Lakind.

After a distinguished career in the Superior Court of New Jersey, initially as a trial judge who served in all divisions, including as presiding judge of general equity (Mercer County), Judge Parrillo has served the past thirteen years as a presiding judge of the Appellate Division. Judge Parrillo has authored over 1,500 opinions, of which, 160 were published in many areas of the law, including torts, employment, criminal, environmental and constitutional law.

Among his other distinctions while on the bench, Judge Parrillo was appointed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey to serve as Chair of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Extrajudicial Activities, Chair of the Conference of General Equity Presiding Judges, and co-chair of the Supreme Court Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution. From 1996 to 1998, Judge Parrillo chaired the 34-member Judiciary Strategic Planning Committee whose landmark report, recommending unification of a statewide judiciary and standardization through adoption of best practices, has been hailed as a blueprint for leading the court system into the 21st Century.

Mr. Parrillo graduated from Rutgers College and cum laude from Washington and Lee University School of Law. Following a clerkship on the Superior Court, he joined the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, eventually becoming Executive Assistant Attorney General, in charge of all civil law and regulatory matters within the agency. While in the Department, Mr. Parrillo was appointed by the Governor to be the Director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement, the state regulatory agency that polices and oversees legalized casino gaming in Atlantic City. In that capacity, Mr. Parrillo published and lectured extensively on gaming matters, corporate compliance programs, white collar crime and debt financing. He also co-authored the June 20, 1988 “Report and Recommendations of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Gambling.” Mr. Parrillo has argued and briefed cases in the United States Supreme Court, including the notable Local 54 case, establishing the State’s right to regulate casino labor unions.

Active in bar activities, Mr. Parrillo is a member of the Mercer County Inn of Court, the Mercer and State Bar Associations, and has lectured for the New Jersey Judicial College and the Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Mr. Parrillo brings this wealth of experience to Szaferman Lakind, where he will be available for arbitration and mediation of complex disputes, consultation on trial and appellate matters, support and discovery management and service as a special master.
